The Quebec government is promising to help out financially in the wake of the tornado that touched down yesterday afternoon in the Laurentians community of Mont Laurier, destroying several homes and injuring one person.
Minister of labour and responsible for the Laurentians David Whissell made the announcement at a news conference in Mont Laurier.
The tornado damaged 21 homes and left 50 people homeless. Almost all of them are now staying with friends or family. The Red Cross had to put up one family of four.
Yvan Leroux, regional director of Quebec Civil Security, says after the destruction, the rebuilding begins.
"They have to clean up the streets and take the trees out (that fell) and after that, it will be the construction," Leroux tells CJAD News.
Jack Chadirdjian of the Insurance Bureau of Canada says tornado insurance isn't necessary: homeowners who had insurance policies will be covered since most natural disasters are included. Swimming pools and cabanas would be covered only if there's an added clause in the policy. Damaged cars would be covered by the insurance policy on the vehicle.
Chadirdjian says he expects the claims to be hefty.
"There was an event I think in Blainville a little while back. I do not recall the amount but it wasn't this big. We don't have too many tornadoes in Quebec fortunately."
