Insurance tailored to the activities of homeopaths and complementary medicine practitioners

Every consultation involves professional liability. In addition to your practice, your business also needs protection.

More and more Canadians are consulting complementary medicine practitioners. Insurers now recognize these services for reimbursement purposes.

La Turquoise works with the Syndicat professionnel des Homéopathes du Québec (SPHQ), which is affiliated with the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN).

As a broker, La Turquoise has been assisting natural medicine practitioners for more than 20 years. You can get a quote online or by phone.

Two conditions apply:

  • be a member of a professional association;
  • hold professional liability insurance.

Insurance available through La Turquoise can combine several of your activities under one policy:

  • homeopathy;
  • naturopathy;
  • massage therapy;
  • acupuncture;
  • osteopathy;
  • kinesiology;
  • hypnotherapy.

The policy includes three essential types of coverage.

  1. Professional liability
    It covers claims related to your advice or treatments.
  2. Commercial general liability
    It provides protection if a client is injured or property is damaged.
  3. Property coverage
    It protects your equipment, massage tables, therapeutic devices and office contents.

The insurance is designed for self-employed practitioners and offers pricing tailored to their needs.

Coverage may apply when you practise:

  • in a private office;
  • in a shared clinic;
  • at your clients’ homes.

The insurance is available in all Canadian provinces.

Homeopath insurance coverage included in the alternative medicine program

See what the program covers
  • Professional liability: A client disputes a treatment or advice you provided during a consultation. This coverage protects you against liability arising from your professional care and services.

Depending on your situation, you can add three optional coverages.

  • Commercial general liability: A client is injured at your office, or a visitor causes property damage. This coverage protects you against claims involving third-party bodily injury or property damage.
  • Criminal defence costs: A formal complaint is filed against you. This coverage helps cover the legal costs of your defence.
  • Business property and contents: This coverage protects your therapeutic equipment, furniture and office contents against covered damage or breakage.
    • Loss of income: If a covered loss temporarily closes your place of practice, this coverage helps replace lost income during the interruption.
    • Coverage for theft of money: This coverage protects your business if money is stolen by an employee or an outside party.

Recommended coverages

Your program covers your professional and general liability. Other coverages can complement your protection based on your situation.

Cyber insurance

You store client files, session notes, or payment information. A breach of that data can engage your liability. Cyber insurance covers recovery costs, income losses, and regulatory fines in the event of a cyber incident.

Learn more about cyber insurance
  • A virus causes the disclosure of confidential client information.
  • A hack makes health data stored in your system accessible to others.
  • An email sent to the wrong recipient exposes personal information.

Contents and professional property

Your work equipment is a significant investment. This coverage protects your property against damage caused by a covered loss.

  • A flood damages your massage table and office furniture.
  • A fire destroys your therapeutic equipment and products in stock.
  • Water damage affects devices in your practice space.

Equipment breakdown

Some therapeutic devices are costly to repair or replace. This coverage handles the sudden and accidental breakdown of your electrical or mechanical equipment.

  • An electrical surge damages your light therapy device.
  • A mechanical failure disables your neurofeedback equipment.
  • A sudden breakdown of a laser therapy device requires immediate replacement.

Your questions about insurance for homeopaths in Quebec

Practising homeopathy raises several questions about insurance. Requirements, coverage, equipment and professional liability considerations may vary depending on your situation.
This section answers common insurance questions from homeopaths. It can help you assess the coverage that fits your professional practice.

Professional liability insurance is not always legally required in Quebec. However, it is strongly recommended for homeopaths who provide services to clients.
It covers financial consequences related to an error, incident or alleged harm arising from a consultation.
Professional associations, landlords or business partners may require this coverage.
Some insurers that reimburse complementary medicine services may also require practitioners to carry professional liability insurance.

Commercial general liability insurance covers bodily injury or property damage caused to a third party.
For example, a client could slip at the entrance to your office. An item could also be damaged during a visit.
Professional liability insurance, on the other hand, relates to your professional services. It may respond when a treatment, advice or the outcome of a consultation is disputed.
These two types of coverage address different risks associated with practising homeopathy.

Yes. Complementary medicine insurance available through La Turquoise can combine several activities under one policy.
You can practise homeopathy alongside naturopathy, massage therapy, acupuncture or another eligible discipline.
Depending on your situation, one policy may cover all your activities. This means you do not need a separate insurance policy for each discipline.

Complementary medicine insurance is available in all Canadian provinces.
A homeopath who practises in Quebec and another province can combine these activities under one policy.
Your broker will verify that your activities and practice locations are properly declared in your policy.

Coverage may apply to different practice locations.
You may practise in a private office, a shared clinic or your clients’ homes. Work-related travel may also be considered.
Tell your broker about all your practice locations when requesting a quote. This allows your broker to verify that your policy accurately reflects your situation.
