A program designed for animal-assisted intervention professionals

This program covers three types of activities: zootherapy, zoo-education and zoo-animation.

Eligible profiles include zootherapists, counselling practitioners, specialized educators and animal therapists.

Interventions can take place in a clinic, at a client’s home or in an institutional setting. These settings include schools, long-term care facilities (CHSLD) and rehabilitation centres. Private practice, self-employed work and organizations are also eligible.

Covered animals

  • The following animals are covered at no extra charge: cat, dog (excluding Pit Bulls, Rottweilers and German Shepherds), chinchilla, pig, guinea pig, rooster, hen, ferret, hedgehog, rabbit, domesticated bird or parrot, sugar glider, aquarium fish, rat, mouse, hamster and turtle.
  • The following animals are eligible with an additional premium: horse, pony, donkey, miniature horse (under 97 cm at the withers), goat, sheep and alpaca.

A broker confirms that your activities fall within the program’s scope before enrolment.

Auto and home insurance discounts are available to members and their families.

A collaboration with the Corporation des Zoothérapeutes du Québec

La Turquoise developed this insurance program in collaboration with the Corporation des Zoothérapeutes du Québec (CZQ), with tailored solutions for the industry.

Coverage included in the CZQ program

See what the program covers
  • Professional liability: a client disputes a result following your intervention. This coverage protects you against claims arising from your professional activities. Two limit levels are available depending on your needs.
  • General liability: a visitor is injured during an intervention. Your animal causes damage to a client. This coverage protects against bodily injury and property damage caused to a third party in the course of your practice. Coverage applies only during professional interventions. An additional insured can be added under this coverage.
  • Property (optional): your professional equipment is covered against damage. A device breaks down or water damage occurs: repair or replacement costs are covered. Choose from two limit levels based on your needs.
  • Privacy and security breach costs (optional): a data breach affects your clients. This coverage pays for restoration costs and your liability in the event of a cybersecurity incident.
  • Please note: this program covers self-employed workers only. Each CZQ member must hold their own coverage. Employees are not covered by this certificate.

  • Optional coverages based on your needs: coverage for your professional property and protection in the event of a cybersecurity incident can be added to your policy.

Recommended coverage

Your program covers your professional and general liabilities. Other coverages can complement your protection depending on your situation.

Cyber risk insurance

Sensitive data is present in any professional practice: client files, session notes, payment information. A breach of this data engages your liability. Cyber insurance covers restoration costs and your liability in the event of a cybersecurity incident.

Learn more about cyber insurance
  • A virus leads to the disclosure of confidential client information.
  • A hack makes session files stored in your system accessible.
  • An email sent to the wrong recipient exposes personal information.

Professional contents and property

Your work equipment represents a significant investment. This coverage protects your property against damage caused by a covered loss.

  • A flood damages your therapeutic materials and intervention equipment.
  • A fire destroys the accessories and specialized materials used with the animals.
  • Water damage affects the devices in your practice space.

Your questions about insurance for animal-assisted intervention professionals

Zootherapists, animal therapists and counselling practitioners often ask the same questions. Here are the most useful answers to help you understand your coverage.

Zootherapy involves a structured helping relationship. An error, omission or poor assessment can result in a claim from a client. Professional liability insurance protects the practitioner if their practice is challenged in the context of an intervention.

General liability covers bodily injury or property damage caused to a third party by the animal during a declared professional activity. Coverage applies only during your interventions. Injuries or damage caused to your animal are not covered by this program.

Professional equipment used during interventions, such as harnesses or specialized materials, can be covered under the property coverage. This option applies in cases of theft, fire or accidental damage.

It is not required by law. However, some organizations, centres or institutions require it to allow practice with their clients. Having coverage in place makes it easier to access institutional settings such as schools, long-term care facilities (CHSLD) and rehabilitation centres.

Yes. The animal used in your interventions must be on the list of animals eligible for the program. Some animals are covered at no extra charge. Others, such as horses or alpacas, require an additional premium. A broker confirms the details at the time of enrolment.
