The types of motorcycles and three-wheelers we insure

Motorcycles and three-wheelers are used for leisure rides and daily commutes. Like any motorized vehicle, they can be exposed to certain risks, such as theft, physical damage, or a road accident. Motorcycle insurance protects your vehicle and can include general  liability coverage if you cause damage to other people or their property.

A La Turquoise broker guides you in choosing coverage adapted to your needs.

This insurance can cover several types of vehicles:

  • Motorcycles.
  • Mopeds, also known as scooters.
  • Motorcycles with a sidecar.
  • Three-wheelers, such as certain Can-Am Spyder or T-REX models.

If your model is unique or modified, a broker can verify which coverage applies to your vehicle.

Recommended coverage

Motorcycle insurance covers damage you may cause to others. Some coverage also protects your motorcycle against damage following an accident, theft, or other incidents. Depending on your vehicle and how you use it, additional coverage can be added to protect you in the event of a loss.

General liability

General liability covers physical and material damage caused to others. This coverage is mandatory in Quebec.

  • Hydro-Québec pole, guardrail, or road sign is damaged in a collision.
  • A structure is damaged following a loss of control.

Accident without collision

Certain events can damage a motorcycle without another vehicle being involved. This coverage includes theft, vandalism, fire, and certain damage caused by external factors.

  • Your motorcycle is stolen.
  • A fire causes damage to the vehicle.
  • A branch falls on your motorcycle during a storm.

Collision or upset

This coverage covers damage to your motorcycle after an impact or upset. It applies when an accident occurs on the road or during a manoeuvre.

  • Your motorcycle collides with another vehicle.
  • The motorcycle tips over after losing balance.
  • An obstacle is struck during a manoeuvre.

Personal accident coverage for injury or death

This coverage provides a benefit when an accident results in serious injury or death. It can help cover certain expenses or provide financial support according to the terms of the contract.

  • An accident requires medical care or a rehabilitation period.
  • A temporary disability prevents you from working.
A death occurs following an accident involving the motorcycle.

Practical coverage

Some coverage adds useful benefits when you ride your motorcycle or if an unexpected situation arises on the road. They can simplify certain steps after an incident or help you get back on the road more quickly. Depending on your motorcycle and how you use it, these coverages can complement your insurance and provide support in different situations.

Roadside assistance

Roadside assistance provides help when a problem occurs on the road. It can include towing, breakdown service, or fuel delivery, depending on the coverage included in your contract.

  • The motorcycle needs to be towed after a breakdown.
  • The battery needs to be recharged on the roadside.
  • Fuel delivery is required.

Accessories and modifications coverage

Certain coverage allows you to insure accessories or modifications added to your motorcycle. These items can represent significant value and are not always included in basic coverage.

  • Saddlebags installed on the motorcycle are damaged in a covered loss.
  • A windshield or navigation system needs to be replaced after an accident.
  • Accessories added to the vehicle are damaged in an incident.

Transportation expenses

If a covered loss temporarily leaves you without your motorcycle, this coverage reimburses certain expenses incurred to travel by other means. It can cover vehicle rental, taxi fares, or public transit fares, according to the terms of your contract.

  • Your motorcycle is being repaired after a covered loss, and you need to rent a vehicle to get to work.
  • You use a taxi or public transit while your motorcycle is out of service.
  • Your motorcycle is declared a total loss, and you need temporary transportation while your claim is being processed.

Replacement cost coverage (Q.E.F. No. 5)

Replacement cost coverage (Q.E.F. No. 5) is an optional policy in addition to your primary motorcycle insurance policy. If your vehicle is declared a total loss or is stolen, this coverage provides additional compensation to help replace your vehicle and offset depreciation.

The amount you receive depends on the condition of the vehicle at the time of purchase and the terms of your policy.

  • New vehicle: You are compensated based on the value of a similar new vehicle from the current model year, without depreciation applied.
  • Used vehicle:
    • Purchased from a dealer: You are compensated based on the purchase price, plus an indexed percentage for each year of use.
    • Not purchased from a dealer: You are entitled to a supplement to the compensation amount from your primary insurer.

  • No deductible in the event of a total loss
  • Reimbursement of the deductible in the event of a partial loss, depending on the option chosen
  • Allowance for a courtesy vehicle during the claims process
  • Premium guaranteed for the entire duration of coverage
  • Financing terms available from 12 to 84 months

TAG discount: Is your vehicle equipped with a tracking system? A discount is applied directly to your premium. The system must be installed within the timeframe specified in the contract for the discount to apply.

  • Automobiles
  • Motorcycles and three-wheelers
  • Snowmobiles
  • All-terrain vehicles (ATVs, quads, and side-by-sides)
  • Recreational vehicles (RVs)
  • Trailers and tent trailers
  • Travel trailers and motorhomes

This coverage can be especially valuable during the first years of ownership, when depreciation is at its highest. It may allow you to receive more than your vehicle’s actual cash value in the event of a covered loss.

Your questions about motorcycle insurance

Do you have questions about motorcycle insurance in Quebec? This section covers the most frequently asked questions. You will find clear answers regarding your obligations, the coverage available, and what influences the cost of your insurance.

Yes. In Quebec, every motorcycle owner must hold general  liability coverage. This coverage protects against material damage caused to others in an accident. In practice, many riders opt for a higher amount to better protect themselves in the event of a significant claim.

The cost varies depending on the rider and the vehicle. Here are the main factors taken into account.

  • Type of motorcycle, such as sport, touring, or cruiser
  • Age of the rider and driving record
  • Place of residence and storage location
  • Kilometres ridden during the season

Several characteristics of the vehicle and the rider are taken into account.

  • Engine capacity and horsepower
  • Year and value of the vehicle
  • Age and experience of the rider
  • Claims history

A more powerful motorcycle or a claims history can result in a higher premium.

Yes, in certain cases. Motorcycle insurance can cost less, especially for experienced riders with a standard motorcycle.

Certain situations can, however, cause the premium to increase.

  • A powerful sport motorcycle
  • A young rider
  • A record with infractions

The premium also takes into account the seasonal nature of motorcycle use.

No. Even if your motorcycle is not in use during winter, it generally must remain insured for general  liability. A stationary vehicle can still cause damage.

  • The motorcycle falls and damages another person’s property
  • A fire breaks out in the garage
  • A leak causes material damage

To remain covered in the event of a loss, it is recommended to maintain minimum insurance coverage during the winter season.
