Every driver in Quebec must have vehicle insurance. Minimum civil liability insurance of at least $50,000 is mandatory in Quebec under the Automobile Insurance Act. However, vehicle insurance of $1 million is recommended.
Civil liability insurance protects you for:
- physical damage to your car or other vehicle resulting from a collision in Quebec, for which you were not at fault;
- bodily injury or property damage resulting from a collision outside Quebec, for which you are at fault;
- bodily injury to others resulting from a collision, for which you are at fault.
For more complete protection, you can add additional coverage recommended for you by your insurance representative, particularly against collision or rollover, or against all perils (theft, break-in, fire, vandalism, etc.), or only against some of these specific perils. You can also obtain another type of coverage called riders or endorsements, such as the highly popular replacement-cost endorsement.
Your insurance premium will vary depending on the characteristics of your vehicle (type, model, make, year, colour, etc.), your usage, your place of residence (city or countryside), the profiles of its drivers, the coverage chosen, the number of previous accidents and claims, and your driving record with the SAAQ.
