Recreational vehicle (RV) insurance based on how you use it

Motorized recreational vehicles are designed for travel and extended stays on the road, with a living space built into the vehicle. They are commonly used for vacations, weekend getaways, and longer trips.

Like any motorized vehicle, an RV can be exposed to a range of risks. An accident, theft, or damage during a stay can occur at any time.

The right coverage protects your recreational vehicle and certain equipment. It can also include general liability if damage is caused to other people or facilities.

Recreational vehicle classes

Motorized recreational vehicles are generally divided into three categories.

Class A RVs are the largest models, built on a chassis specifically designed for this type of vehicle.

  • Length of up to approximately 45 feet
  • Weight that can exceed 15,000 lb
  • Spacious living area with full amenities

Class B RVs are the most compact models, often built from a van conversion.

  • Approximately 17 to 19 feet in length
  • Easier to drive and park
  • Space for a smaller number of occupants

Class C RVs offer a mid-size format, built on a truck or commercial vehicle chassis.

  •  Sleeping area above the cab
  • Generally, between 20 and 35 feet in length
  • Greater passenger capacity than compact models

A La Turquoise broker can help you choose the right coverage based on your RV type, its value, and how often you use it.

Recommended coverage

Motorized RV insurance accounts for the risks associated with road travel, camping stays, and use of the vehicle. Some coverages protect against damage caused to others; others protect the RV itself against various incidents.

General liability

General liability covers property damage or bodily injury caused to others while operating a motorized recreational vehicle. This coverage is mandatory to drive on Quebec roads.

  • A motorhome strikes a structure at a campground.
  • Exterior equipment causes damage to an installation.

Comprehensive coverage

Some damage can occur without any impact with another vehicle. This coverage applies to events such as theft, vandalism, fire, or damage caused by external elements during travel or while the vehicle is parked.

  • The RV is stolen during a camping stay.
  • A fire damages the vehicle.
  • A branch falls on the motorhome during a storm.

Collision or upset

This coverage applies to damage caused to your motorized recreational vehicle following an impact or accident on the road. It covers collisions with another vehicle, a tree, or an object, as well as upset. A deductible applies when a claim is filed.

  • An RV collides with another vehicle.
  • A motorhome strikes a tree.
  • The RV hits an object during a maneuver.

Accident benefits coverage

If an accident involving a motorized recreational vehicle results in serious injury or death, this coverage provides a benefit payment. It can help cover certain medical expenses or provide financial support according to the terms set out in the policy.

  • An accident requires medical care.
  • Permanent injuries appear following an accident.
  • A death occurs because of an accident involving the insured vehicle.

Practical coverage

Some coverages can make it easier to manage an unexpected situation while travelling in a motorized recreational vehicle. Depending on how you use your RV and the coverage you choose, they add useful benefits during a trip or a camping stay.

Weekly indemnity

An accident can sometimes prevent you from working for a set period of time. Weekly indemnity provides a payment during the period of disability to help offset a loss of income.

  • An injury following an accident prevents you from working for several weeks.
  • A recovery period is required after a  covered loss involving the RV.

Claims forgiveness

An at-fault loss can result in an increase to your insurance premium. This coverage allows you to protect your insurance record and avoid a premium increase, subject to the conditions set out in the policy.

Roadside assistance

An unexpected situation can arise while travelling in a recreational vehicle. Roadside assistance provides help on the road, for example for towing, a tire change, or a fuel delivery.

  • The RV must be towed following a mechanical breakdown.
  • A flat tire requires the intervention of an assistance service.
  • Fuel delivery is needed after running out of gas.
Handing over a car key between two people near a vehicle. Visual associated with replacement insurance after a loss or a claim.

Replacement cost coverage (Q.E.F. No. 5)

Replacement cost coverage (Q.E.F. No. 5) is an optional policy in addition to your primary RV insurance policy. If your vehicle is declared a total loss or is stolen, this coverage provides additional compensation to help replace your vehicle and offset depreciation.

The amount you receive depends on the condition of the vehicle at the time of purchase and the terms of your policy.

  • New vehicle: You are compensated based on the value of a similar new vehicle from the current model year, without depreciation applied.
  • Used vehicle:
    • Purchased from a dealer: You are compensated based on the purchase price, plus an indexed percentage for each year of use.
    • Not purchased from a dealer: You are entitled to a supplement to the compensation amount from your primary insurer.

  • No deductible in the event of a total loss
  • Reimbursement of the deductible in the event of a partial loss, depending on the option chosen
  • Allowance for a courtesy vehicle during the claims process
  • Premium guaranteed for the entire duration of coverage
  • Financing terms available from 12 to 84 months

  • TAG discount: Is your vehicle equipped with a tracking system? A discount is applied directly to your premium. The system must be installed within the timeframe specified in the contract for the discount to apply.

  • Automobiles
  • Motorcycles and three-wheelers
  • Snowmobiles
  • All-terrain vehicles (ATVs, quads, and side-by-sides)
  • Recreational vehicles (RVs)
  • Trailers and tent trailers
  • Travel trailers and motorhomes

This coverage can be especially valuable during the first years of ownership, when depreciation is at its highest. It may allow you to receive more than your vehicle’s actual cash value in the event of a covered loss.

Your questions about recreational vehicle (RV) insurance

Questions about RV insurance in Quebec? This section covers the most common questions about available coverage, applicable requirements, and factors that can affect the cost of insurance for a motorhome or motorized RV.

Motorized recreational vehicle insurance is not mandatory in every situation. However, when an RV is driven on public roads, general liability coverage is required. This coverage applies to damage caused to other people or to property in the event of an accident.

RV insurance can cover a range of risks, including damage following an accident, theft, fire, and vandalism. Some coverage also includes general liability if damage is caused to other people or facilities. Depending on the coverage chosen, certain equipment and personal belongings inside the recreational vehicle may also be protected.

Motorized recreational vehicles are generally divided into three main categories: Class A, Class B, and Class C.

  • Class A: the largest RVs, built on a specialized chassis with a full living space.
  • Class B: compact models, often converted from a van.
  • Class C: mid-size RVs, built on a truck chassis with a cab-over-sleeping area.

The type of RV can influence the coverage required and the cost of insurance.

The cost of recreational vehicle insurance depends on several factors.

  • The value of the RV
  • The vehicle class (A, B, or C)
  • The year and model
  • How the vehicle is used and how frequently it is driven
  • Claims and infraction history of all drivers

A broker can compare different coverages to find a solution suited to your vehicle and how you use it.

Depending on the coverage chosen, certain belongings inside the recreational vehicle may be covered, such as camping equipment, electronics, or personal effects. Limits and conditions vary based on the coverage set out in the policy.
