Trailers, tent-trailers, and towable RVs are used for travel, camping, or transporting equipment. These vehicles are commonly used for vacations, weekend getaways, and outdoor activities.

Like any recreational vehicle, they can be exposed to various risks. Theft, vandalism, or damage during transport can occur. An incident can also happen at a campsite or while the vehicle is being towed.

The right insurance coverage protects your trailer, tent-trailer, or towable RV. It can cover damage to the vehicle as well as certain belongings transported inside. Civil liability coverage is also essential. This protection applies if damage is caused to other people or to property at a campsite or on the road.

This insurance can cover several types of vehicles:

  • Travel trailer
  • Fifth-wheel trailer
  • Truck camper mounted on a pickup truck
  • Tent-trailer
  • Hybrid trailer
  • Camping trailer

Motorized RVs are generally classified as Class A, B, or C. For this type of vehicle, see our page on recreational vehicle insurance.

Recommended coverage

Insurance for trailers, tent-trailers, and towable RVs accounts for the risks associated with towing, travel, and camping stays. Some coverages protect against damage caused to others; others protect the vehicle against an accident, theft, or fire.

Civil liability

Civil liability coverage applies to bodily injury or property damage caused to others while using a trailer, tent-trailer, or towable RV. It applies when an incident results in damage to a vehicle, a campsite installation, or a person.

  • A trailer backs up and damages a parked vehicle.
  • A towable RV detaches and strikes equipment at a campsite.
  • An object transported in a trailer causes damage to an installation.

Accident other than collision

Certain events can damage a trailer, tent-trailer, or towable RV without involving an impact with another vehicle. Theft, vandalism, fire, and damage caused by external elements are among the covered perils.

  • A trailer is stolen during a camping stay.
  • A tent trailer is damaged by fire.
  • A branch falls on a trailer during a storm.

Collision or upset

This coverage applies to damage to your trailer, tent-trailer, or towable RV following an impact or accident while being towed. It covers collisions with another vehicle or obstacle, as well as an upset on the road. A deductible applies when a claim is filed.

  • A trailer collides with another vehicle in traffic.
  • A towable RV strikes a post or bollard during a maneuver.
  • A tent trailer overturns after losing stability on the road.

Personal accident coverage for injury or death

In the event of a serious accident, this coverage provides a benefit if serious injuries occur or in the event of death. It can help cover certain medical expenses or provide financial support depending on the protection included in the contract.

  • An accident results in injuries requiring medical care.
  • Permanent injuries appear following an accident.
A death occurs following an accident involving the insured vehicle.

Practical coverage options

Certain coverages can help manage an unexpected situation during a trip or a camping stay. Depending on the type of trailer, tent-trailer, or towable RV and how it is used, they add useful benefits to your coverage.

Weekly indemnity

If an accident prevents you from working for a set period, this coverage provides a weekly payment. It can help offset a loss of income during the period of disability.

Roadside assistance

A breakdown on the road can quickly complicate a trip. Roadside assistance gives you access to help when you need it, such as towing or fuel delivery. Several interventions may be available each year to help you get back on your way.

Handing over a car key between two people near a vehicle. Visual associated with replacement insurance after a loss or a claim.

Replacement cost coverage (Q.E.F. No. 5)

Replacement cost coverage (Q.E.F. No. 5) is optional coverage that may be added to your primary trailer insurance policy. If your vehicle is declared a total loss or is stolen, this coverage provides additional compensation to help replace your vehicle and offset depreciation.

The amount you receive depends on the condition of the vehicle at the time of purchase and the terms of your policy.

  • New vehicle: You are compensated based on the value of a similar new vehicle from the current model year, without depreciation applied.
  • Used vehicle:
    • Purchased from a dealer: You are compensated based on the purchase price, plus an indexed percentage for each year of use.
    • Not purchased from a dealer: You are entitled to a supplement to the compensation amount from your primary insurer.

  • No deductible in the event of a total loss
  • Reimbursement of the deductible in the event of a partial loss, depending on the option chosen
  • Allowance for a courtesy vehicle during the claims process
  • Premium guaranteed for the entire duration of coverage
  • Financing terms available from 12 to 84 months

TAG discount: If your vehicle is equipped with a TAG tracking system, a discount may apply directly to your premium. The system must be installed within the timeframe specified in the contract for the discount to apply.

  • Automobiles
  • Motorcycles and three-wheelers
  • Snowmobiles
  • All-terrain vehicles (ATVs, quads, and side-by-sides)
  • Recreational vehicles (RVs)
  • Trailers and tent trailers
  • Travel trailers and motorhomes

This coverage can be especially valuable during the first years of ownership, when depreciation is at its highest. It may allow you to receive more than your vehicle’s actual cash value in the event of a covered loss.

Your questions about trailer and tent trailer insurance

Have questions about trailer insurance in Quebec? This section covers the most frequently asked questions. You will find clear answers about available coverage, applicable requirements, and what can influence the cost of insurance.

Trailer insurance is not generally required in Quebec. However, civil liability coverage may be required when a trailer or towable RV is on the road and being towed by an insured vehicle. Some campsites or storage facilities may also require proof of insurance.

Trailer insurance can cover damage to the vehicle following an accident, theft, fire, or certain unexpected events. It also includes civil liability coverage if damage is caused to other people or to property. Some coverage also applies to belongings transported inside the trailer.

In some cases, the towing vehicle’s auto insurance may include civil liability coverage. However, this coverage does not always extend to damage sustained by the towed vehicle. Separate insurance may be necessary to protect the trailer against theft, fire, or physical damage.

Certain belongings transported in a trailer or tent-trailer may be covered, depending on the coverage selected. Limits and conditions vary depending on the coverage included in the contract.

A towable RV is not always automatically insured. In many cases, only the civil liability coverage from the towing vehicle applies. Additional coverage may be necessary to protect the towable RV itself against damage.
