Travel trailer and motorhome insurance that fits the way you travel

Travel trailers and motorhomes give you the freedom to explore in a way that fits how you travel, whether it is a weekend getaway or a long road trip. Like any recreational vehicle, a travel trailer or motorhome may be exposed to various risks, such as theft, physical damage, or unexpected incidents on the road.

The right coverage protects your vehicle and the contents inside. It also covers your general liability if your trailer causes damage to others, whether at a campground or on the road.

A La Turquoise broker will help you choose the coverage suited to your trailer, how you use it, and your travel habits.

This coverage may apply to the following trailer types:

  • Travel trailer
  • Fifth-wheel
  • Truck camper (mounted on a pickup truck)
  • Tent trailer
  • Hybrid trailer

Motorized recreational vehicles are classified as Class A, B, or C. If you own this type of vehicle, see our dedicated recreational vehicle (RV) insurance page.

Recommended coverage

Whether it’s protecting you from liability for damage caused to others or safeguarding your travel trailer or motorhome against unexpected events, these coverages work together to give you confidence and peace of mind wherever the road takes you.

General liability

General liability covers bodily injury or property damage your trailer may cause to others. This coverage is mandatory to operate on Quebec roads. It applies when an incident causes damage to another vehicle, personal property, or a person.

  • Your trailer strikes a parked vehicle during a manoeuvre.
  • A pedestrian is injured in an incident at a campground.
  • Your trailer damages personal property while in transit.

Loss other than collision

Some events can damage your trailer without any direct impact with another vehicle. This coverage includes theft, vandalism, fire, and certain damage caused by external elements.

  • Your trailer is stolen or vandalized.
  • A fire causes damage to your trailer.
  • A branch falls on your trailer.
  • An animal struck on the road damages your vehicle.
  • Road debris chips the windshield of your motorhome.

Collision or upset

This coverage pays for damage to your trailer caused by an impact or accident while towing. It applies in the event of a collision with another vehicle or obstacle, or if the trailer overturns on the road. A deductible typically applies when a claim is filed.

  • Your trailer strikes another vehicle.
  • A utility pole is hit
  • Your trailer overturns

Accident benefits

This coverage provides an indemnity if an accident results in serious injury or death. It can help offset certain medical expenses or provide financial support, depending on the coverage set out in the policy.

  • An accident causes injuries requiring care or rehabilitation.
  • Permanent impairment results from an accident.
  • A death occurs following an accident involving the insured vehicle.

Optional coverage

Some coverage makes it easier to manage an unexpected event while travelling or camping. Depending on your vehicle, how you use it, and your travel habits, these options add specific benefits to your coverage.

Weekly indemnity

This coverage provides a weekly payment if a road accident prevents you from working.

Claims protection

This coverage allows you to avoid a premium increase for two at-fault losses, subject to the terms set out in the policy. Note: This endorsement must be added to your policy before any loss occurs.

Roadside assistance

Roadside assistance connects you with help when something unexpected happens on the road. It may cover towing, fuel delivery, or other services, depending on the terms set out in the policy.

  • Your trailer needs to be towed after a breakdown on the road.
  • A fuel delivery is required if you run out of gas.

Replacement cost coverage (F.P.Q. no. 5)

The replacement cost coverage (F.P.Q. No. 5) is a secondary policy to your primary auto insurance contract. In the event of a total loss or theft, you may receive a supplemental payout to replace your trailer or motorhome.

The calculation varies depending on the vehicle’s condition at the time of purchase. You may receive an amount greater than the market value at the time of the loss.

  • New vehicle: You are compensated based on the value of a similar new vehicle from the current model year, without depreciation applied.
  • Used vehicle:
    • Purchased from a dealer: You are compensated based on the purchase price, plus an indexed percentage for each year of use.
    • Private purchase: You are entitled to a supplement to the compensation amount from your primary insurer.

  • No deductible in the event of a total loss
  • Reimbursement of the deductible in the event of a partial loss, depending on the option chosen
  • Premium guaranteed for the entire duration of coverage
  • Financing terms available from 12 to 84 months

  • TAG discount: Is your vehicle equipped with a tracking system? A discount is applied directly to your premium. The system must be installed within the timeframe specified in the contract for the discount to apply.

  • Automobiles
  • Motorcycles and three-wheelers
  • Snowmobiles
  • All-terrain vehicles (ATVs, quads, and side-by-sides)
  • Recreational vehicles (RVs)
  • Trailers and tent trailers
  • Travel trailers and motorhomes

This coverage is useful right from the time of purchase, when depreciation is fastest.

Frequently asked questions about travel trailers and motorhomes insurance

Have questions about travel trailer or motorhome insurance in Quebec? This section covers the most common ones. You will find clear answers about available coverage, applicable requirements, and what influences the cost of your insurance.

General liability coverage may be required when your trailer is on the road or being towed. This coverage is usually an extension of the towing vehicle. Many campgrounds and storage facilities also require proof of insurance.

Travel trailer insurance can cover damage to your recreational vehicle resulting from a collision, theft, fire, or an unexpected incident. It also includes general liability for damage caused to others or their property, as well as coverage for personal belongings inside the trailer.

General liability coverage on the towing vehicle extends to the trailer. However, this protection does not cover damage to the trailer itself, such as theft, fire, or physical damage. A separate policy or additional coverage is required to fully protect your trailer.

Depending on the coverage option chosen, certain personal items carried in your trailer may be protected, such as clothing, electronics, or camping equipment. Limits and terms vary based on the coverage specified in the policy.

A La Turquoise broker can help you evaluate the available options and find the one that best fits your specific needs.
